The Royal Opera House

Background

The Royal Opera House (ROH) is an opera house and major performing arts venue in Covent Garden, central London. The main auditorium seats 2,256 people, making it the third largest in the city. A solution was required to satisfy Health & Safety and Anti-Terrorism requirements as performances which involved the armoury meant that all personnel had to be accounted for and tracked using an Armoury Management & Tracking System (the 'Buddy' system) which required cellular signal coverage.

Solution

Our solution was the extensive installation of a hybrid active DAS system, as this solved the challenging and complex coverage issues presented between the two armourys, walkways, and various backstage areas.

Challenges

There was a vast area to cover which consisted mainly of corridors from their armoury stores through to back stage areas. Due to the distances involved, our solution design had to finely balance the distribution antenna system (DAS) and split the solution in two parts to maintain connectivity.

Result

This resulted in a stable EE mobile signal throughout the facility, thus ensuring the Buddy system continued to work to track all members carrying arms, keeping them safe in the event of a terrorist attack.
